Federal law requires that all educational content be made accessible for those with disabilities; as a result, you will need to provide captions for any videos made for Christopher University. This document details how you can add captions to a YouTube Video, either using a pre-made captions file, or manually within the platform itself.

Adding Captions via a Captions File

If you have a captions file at the time of uploading, you can add that file at the same time. To do so, click “More Options” at the bottom of the Details page, then scroll down further to see the “Language, Subtitles”, and Closed Captions section.

YouTube Closed Captions Section

From here, click “Upload subtitles/CC”. This will open a window allowing you to locate and  upload your captions file from your computer along with the video.

Adding/Editing Captions Manually within YouTube

If you do not have a captions file, you can use YouTube’s native captioning tool to add captions after publication. To do so, you must first complete the uploading process, then navigate manually to the video’s settings. To do so, select Content within the YouTube Studio to get to your list of all uploaded videos, then click the Edit icon while hovering over the video in question.

Edit Video

Click Subtitles on the far left-hand side.

Subtitles

You may be asked to select a default language for subtitling. Afterwards, you'll be brought to a list of available subtitles  for the video, including automatic subtitles in the chosen language. If you do not have a subtitles file available, you can select "Duplicate and Edit" to use the automatic captions as a base for editing.

Captions List

This will take you to the main captions editing tool, which allows you to edit the automatic captions generated by YouTube. You can also type into the main space at the top to generate new captions.

Caption Editing Window

When you finish editing the captions, click “Publish ” at the top right to publish the edited version of the captions.
