This computer system is the property of Christopher Newport University and it is for authorized use only. By using this system, all users acknowledge notice of, and agree to comply with, the University’s Acceptable Use of Computing Resources Policy (6010). Unauthorized or improper use of this system may result in administrative disciplinary action, civil charges/criminal penalties, and/or other sanctions as set forth in the University’s Policy. By continuing to use this system you indicate your awareness of and consent to these terms and conditions of use.

Users with a compelling need for administrator access to their computers can request local administrator access to their university-owned computer.  Administrative accounts will only be used when necessary to install university-owned software or to make system changes which can only be done with local administrative access.  Local administrator accounts can be approved in response to a written request submitted by the individual desiring local administrator rights and through the requester's department head.  Users approved to have local administrator accounts which are considered critical to the satisfactory performance of their duties are encouraged to apply for extensions on a timely basis or risk losing assigned privileges.  Department heads must maintain documentation that any software installed is legally licensed and must assure continued compliance.  Administrative accounts will only be used during times when increased privileges are required.

Accounts are created as named accounts (E.G. First. Last Name) and will only be allowed as an exception to the Commonwealth ITRM Standard SEC 501-08 (AD-2-COV) and CNU Policy 100 (IT Security Policy).

Alternatives to having a local administrator account or if you're having problems that can't be understood, are to request IT Services install or make changes that are currently limited to IT Services Administrators.  IT Customer Service can be reached by contacting them at 4-7079, or by email at helpdesk@cnu.edu.  IT technicians will either connect remotely to your computer or stop by to assist.

To request administrator access:

  1. Discuss the viability and need with your department head.  Access is only appropriated for experienced computer users with a compelling need.

  2. Fill out the attached Admin Rights Request Form, and have your department head sign it. Attach the signed Admin Rights Usage Agreement to the form.

  3. Once approved by the department head, the completed form should be conveyed to the Provost or appropriate Vice President for approval.

  4. The approved application forms should then be sent to IT services by the Provost’s or Vice President’s office.

  5. IT Services will contact approved applicants by e-mail with a link to mandatory online training.

  6. Once your training is complete, you will be contacted with the information for your administrator account. Training will be completed on an annual basis.

Users with local administrator access agree to the following conditions:

  • This account will only be used when performing actions that require local administrator rights.  All other activities must be performed under a regular user account.

  • Only properly licensed software should be installed on the computer.  Licensing information for any copyrighted software must be forwarded to the ITS Customer Service Desk so that it is available to Commonwealth auditors.  If you need assistance with this procedure or would like to request the purchase of software, contact the Customer Service Desk.

  • No new accounts should be created, and no existing accounts should be elevated.

  • Any changes in hardware to university computer equipment must be conducted by IT Services.  This provision does not include connecting peripheral equipment such as printers, USB storage, or smartphones.

  • Security software installed by the university to protect the network and other users at the university must not be modified or removed

  • Network settings shall not be modified
